Rare and beautiful, ca1920’s Native American Northern Plains / Sioux Indian Paint and Bead Decorated Hide Vest featuring beaded dragonflies and pipes.
This outstanding, early 20th century Sioux Beaded Vest measure approx. 44"at the chest, 25" long from the shoulder seam to the frony hem and 21” long at the back. It is sized to fit a good sized adult male (about a men’s medium or large). The Vest is sinew sewn and made of a heavy weight, brain tanned hide. There is wonderful, mineral pigment decorations at the edges of the neck, front panels, bottom edge and arm openings and figural bead decoration on both the front and back sides.
The figural bead decoration includes images of pipes, dragonflies and traditional Sioux geometric figures and symbols. The beadwork is executed using red white heart, pea green, medium blue, chalk white, pumpkin and cobalt blue colored seed beads.

This rare and very beautiful, ca1920's Sioux Paint and Bead Decorated Hide Vest is in very good condition. The hide elements are generally well preserved and sound with no damage or repairs of any kind but with some minor stiffening to an area along the bottom edge at the front. The beadwork is exceptionally beautiful and very well preserved with no significant loss and no damage or repairs of any kind. There is some wear to the paint decoration and there is a single, small hole at the bottom of the left hand front panel that was likely made on purpose by the original owner. The Vest retains its original short rawhide ties. The Vest is 100% original and very beautiful.
